Definition

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus, known as the endometrium, grows outside of the uterus. This tissue can appear on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other areas within the pelvis, and sometimes even beyond. Because this misplaced tissue behaves like endometrial tissue, it thickens, breaks down, and bleeds with each menstrual cycle. However, unlike normal menstrual flow, this blood has no way to exit the body, which can lead to inflammation, pain, scar tissue formation, and other complications.
