Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, often progressive, disease in which the body's immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath that covers nerve fibers in the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. This disruption of myelin causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body, leading to a wide range of neurological symptoms. The severity and specific symptoms of MS vary significantly from person to person, and the course of the disease is unpredictable.
